Best safaris in the world
Voted as the Word’s Best by the World Travel Awards, Hayward’s Safaris has been taking family heritage and corporate incentive mobile safaris into Africa for over 20 years.
Each and every Safari expedition – for groups of between 40 and 200 people – is custom designed, much like their trending safari style travel luggage, bags and hats fashioned in the ‘Out of Africa’ theme which ensures your experience is pure luxury along with your own butler to boot.
Safari expeditions of old started the classic style of tough practical attire that protects you against blazing sun, spitting snakes and other annoying things such as tsetse flies, sweat and Devil thorns.
Livingstone knew the advantages of canvas tents, durable khaki and air vented hard hats. Not much has changed since them, except the addition of more designer styles to suit both men AND women, Egyptian cotton bedding, silver service dining accompanied by world-class wines and the ultimate luxury safari holiday to see the Big Five… not to shoot them.
The Haywards Safari Range
Haywards Safari travel gear is so popular it’s a fair trade business all of its own, as the corporate social investment (CSI) arm of our safari expedition and event business. Today, you can choose from our Canvas Safari Range, Beaded Ndebele Range and Shweshwe and Leather range.
The Canvas Safari Range is made from 100% cotton canvas (510g/m2) which is treated with a water repellent and a soil retardant.
A small group of artisans based in Zululand (Kwa Zulu Natal South Africa), have been crafting these well-priced and beautiful manufactured bags for over 10 years now. The leather trim is genuine cowhide with antique brass fittings and heavy-duty chain zips which makes this a superior quality bag to travel with on the back of Game Viewer vehicles, small aircraft or to accompany you on your adventure travel trips anywhere around the world. If you’re looking to get one for the whole family or your travel incentive group bulk orders (minimum 5 bags), can be branded and personalized on your behalf.
The Beaded Ndebele Range features bespoke decorative beading work handcrafted by a small group of Ndebele elders in support of their local Ndebele community. The bag is made from the finest leather, tanned and manufactured on site at the Hayward’s leather manufacturer in South Africa. The bags are luxuriously lined with the best quality zips and buckles.
The Ndebele tribe is one of the 11 indigenous tribes of South Africa. They are distinctly different with their colorful garments, unique beadwork and elaborate artwork around their homesteads. Hayward Safaris Production Director Celia du Preez who runs the project has had the privilege of working with the Ndebele women for several years now and your purchase directly influences the upliftment of artists in this rural community. Each bag comes with a story of the artist who beaded and crafted it, for you to cherish.
This style bag is a very practical travel bag. It is the perfect size to fit your travel documents, sunglasses, small water bottle and other necessities. It slides over your shoulder so your hands are free. If you are in the field, in the city or on safari, its perfect company on your excursions.
The Shweshwe and Leather Range and Seshweshwe hats are proudly hand made in South Africa and are truly a celebration of the country’s colorful culture and rich diversity. Each item is a creative work of art that is a contemporary, fun and funky fashion statement.
This product range is designed by an amazing South African artist and manufactured in a local factory where rural women and local crafters contribute to these bespoke pieces available to purchase online. With each purchase you will receive a story on the artist who handmade yours.
“Seshweshwe” is a printed, dyed, cotton fabric, recognized by its intricate designs. It was originally dyed indigo, which was naturally obtained from a plant called Indigofera Tinctoria . Today a variety of colours exist. This fabric is mostly used for traditional garments of the Sotho tribe in South Africa as well as Lesotho.
What to pack when going on Safari
Hot by day and cool by night, seasons change suddenly in Africa. Leave your whites, blacks, silks and linens at home. Start by choosing neutral colours that will blend in with the landscape such as olive, tan, sand and light brown in fabrics that are durable and crushable – there are many new ranges of quick drying fabrics available and you many even consider hemp.
Stick to the basics of attire with cotton T-shirts, short-sleeved tops, shorts, pedal pushers, swim wear, a fleece zip jacket and a lighter rain jacket. For the evenings have a pair of long trousers or a multi-purpose pair that zip on and off at the knee and light weight long sleeved shirts. Take sandals and closed walking shoes and a few good pairs of well-fitting socks and prepare to dress in layers for all activities while on safari.
If you arrive and realise you have packed all the wrong gear, pop into one of the branded stores of Cape Union Mart or Old Khaki where you will find fashions and fabrics to suit the African climate.
If you are on a Photographic Safari, a camera bag is essential, as it a tripod. You will need to protect your camera equipment from the sun, dust and flash rain storms. Add a coverall disposable rainproof poncho and you and your camera will be ready to start shooting
Throw in a pair of topline binoculars and you’re ready for a five-star safari experience in Africa
