Explore The Region

For those staying a few days longer and wishing to explore the region – why not take a quick 20 to 30 min drive from Hayward’s Safari House and visit areas such Cullinan Diamond Mine & Village, Bronkhorstspruit’s Buddhist Temple and the surrounding Ndebele Tribe with its colourful crafts?

There is also lots on offer (pre booking is a requisite) – from zip lining, archery, target shooting, micro lighting, 4×4 driver course and instruction, 4×4 guided game drives in Dinokeng, Golf at either Pebble Rock or Cullinan Village. A diamond mine tour at Cullinan, a massage at Zau Spa, shopping for diamonds at Primalux or picking up bric-à-brac or antiques in the quaint shops, an afternoon enjoying the craft beer or Greek cuisine (As Greek as it Gets) are all highly recommended.

Dinokeng Game Reserve – History

The Dinokeng Game Reserve is the first free-roaming Big 5 residential game reserve in Gauteng – and probably in the world – next to an urbanized area. It is a private/public initiative for which planning and development started in the early 2000’s. It was officially opened on 22 September 2011 after the introduction of four of the Big 5. The DGR Wilderness Way Self-Drive was launched on 16 December 2014.This is the first of a number of public self-drive routes in the reserve for sedan, high clearance and 4 x 4 vehicles. Bookings for this public self-drive route can be made at their Information Office, or at the entrance gates to the DGR (Off the Wagendrift Road) and at the entrance gate to the self-drive route.

Explore Markets

Early Saturday morning from 06h00 to 09h30 is the BOEREMARK in Silverton. If you are really hungry there is no better foodie market than the one in Hazelwood Pretoria from 07h30 – 12h00 every Saturday. Check out the Irene Village Market for scheduled dates.

Explore Culture

Of course don’t forget Pretoria with its famous Jacaranda lined avenues each November and its many museums and national heritage sites – The Union Buildings and the Voortrekker Monument. There are great theatres in and around Pretoria, such as the State Theatre and the smaller Brooklyn and Atterbury Theatres all with 30 min drive of the Hayward’s Safari House.

Ask us for recommendations on outstanding restaurants in the region.

The Countryside

Heading westward and within one hours drive is the Magaliesberg Region of Hartebeespoort Dam with all of its quaint shops, cableway and country restaurants (such as Die Ou Pastorie and Van Gaalens Cheese). Animal interaction at De Wildt Cheetah Breeding Station is en route.

Explore Pre History

The CRADLE OF HUMANKIND is situated near Muldersdrift approximately one hour drive from here. Also of interest is the Tswaing Crater Site near Shoshunguwe, approximately 60 km from here.

Explore The Water

Water Activities | Fishing | Boating

For fishing enthusiasts there are a few good dams to try out such as Roodeplaat and Rust De Winter dams. Roodeplaat dam is renowned for its rowing regatta’s and various picnic areas on the water’s edge. There is also the Roodeplaat Game Reserve adjoining the dam.

A sunset cruise can be booked (depending on water levels), in the Dinokeng Reserve.
